In other news...

When I'm not farming (which in the winter is most of the time) I work at the Center for Sustainable Agriculture at UVM as the Local Food Program Coordinator. I've been here since January 2009, and am now finally starting to feel settled in my role. Get ready for some acronyms, because I'm about to tell you about some very cool programming! Part of my job is working with the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) and the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger. Our collaborative project du jour is integrating local food purchasing and education into the Cooking For Life Program. Cooking For Life is a 10 year old program that focuses on providing nutrition and food safety education to low income Vermonters, specifically those that are enrolled in federal food assistance programs (like WIC and 3SquaresVT.) Basically, the gist is that each class series (and there are many, many series around the state every year!) lasts for 6 weeks. During each series participants do a nutrition lesson, a food budgeting or meal planning lesson, and some cooking with a volunteer chef. At the end of each class, the participants get to bring home a grocery bag full of food so that they can recreate the recipes that they made in class for their families.
The CFL/Local Food Pilot is designed to introduce some new curriculum (like container gardening, home composting, using food assistance benefits at farmers' markets, etc.)as well foster relationships between the class participants and an area farmer. During the series we'll purchase at least one type of vegetable or fruit a week from the partner farm and have at least one farm field trip or in class visit from the farmer. We'll also be hosting 4 local food celebration community dinners that give class participants, chefs, farmers, their friends and families a chance to get together outside of the classroom setting to show off their fabulous cooking skills and enjoy each other's company. You can find our more on our website at http://www.uvm.edu/~susagctr/?Page=Cookingforlife.html

I love my job!

First Winter Market

It was just last winter that Kelli and I hatched our plan to apply to the Intervale Farm Program to start Bella Farm. It's hard to believe that in such a short time that crazy idea has grown into a real farm business. We have steadily moved forward this year, learning about tractor equipment and soil preparation, health department rules and insurance requirements. Last weekend we sold our pesto for the first time at the Burlington Farmers' Market. Kelli and I have both worked markets for other farms, and learned a great deal in the process. Last week was special though: We are finally selling our own product from our own farm!
The Burlington Winter Farmers' Market will be held on the 3rd Saturday of every month from now until April. Come find us there. We'll be the two ladies handing out pesto samples.

Garlic Planting Party 2009

Saturday started out stormy and bleak, but by noon the skies had cleared and some brave souls came out to help us plant 145 lbs worth of German Extra Hardy garlic. We finished in a just under 2 1/2 hours, leaving plenty of time for cider, donuts, cheese, bread and apples. Many thanks to our incredible crew... you are all worth your weight in pesto!

Burlington Farmers Market this winter!

The days are getting chillier, and those of us who haven't had a frost yet know that one is imminent. Though we will miss the summer, there is an exciting feeling in the air as autumn arrives. Along with some bright red maple leaves and some rain splatters, an especially welcome piece of news arrived today for us today at Bella Farm: This winter, you will be able to find Bella Pesto at the Burlington Winter Farmer's Market! We've spent the last month stocking our freezer so that this winter you can have basil and garlic deliciousness. We hope to see you at the market!

The dates for the winter market are:

November 21
December 19
January 16
February 20
March 20
April 17

All markets run from 10am-2pm.
